Tips for independent living

Why i-careWhatever your age or ability, we believe you should be able to live as independently as possible.  These tips, therefore, are designed to show you how small changes can make a big difference to your quality of life and ensure you keep the independence you value so much.

Bathing and showering

If bathing and showering is becoming increasingly difficult or impossible for you to do independently, you are not alone and there are many solutions you can turn to.

Use a bathing or showering aid
There are many aids you can use to help you bath or shower with greater ease, comfort and safety.  For bathing you may find a bath lifter or bath seat helpful.  A bath lifter will actually lower you into the bath and lift you back out, alleviating you of any discomfort when getting in and out of the bath.  A bath seat in contrast, will prevent you having to lower yourself all the way down into the bath, which may be more comfortable for you.

For showering, if you have an over bath shower, a bath board may be ideal.  These boards sit on top of the bath so you can sit while showering.  Alternatively, if you have a shower cubicle, a shower stool may be the perfect solution.

Install a walk-in bath or shower
If you would like a more sophisticated or long-term solution, there is a wide selection of beautifully designed walk-in baths and showers to enable you wash in the greatest comfort and security.  This solution is more expensive than the above aids and may require some alterations to your current bathroom, but offers a luxurious and highly practical option.

Ask i-care
Whether you choose an aid or a walk-in solution, you may still need some help to ensure you are safe and comfortable.  If this is the case, i-care can be there for you.  Our highly trained and compassionate carers understand how you feel and will ensure you bath and shower with dignity and confidence.  If you have a preference, you can also request a carer.

Toileting

Whether you have just been discharged from hospital or are simply finding toileting on your own increasingly difficult, there are many options available to help you.

Toilet aids
From a simple frame which sits around the toilet to offer support when lowering and raising, to a toilet seat which will raise the height of the toilet for comfort, sometimes, using just one of these aids can make a big difference.

Commodes
If you are having difficulty getting to the toilet, a commode may be the perfect solution.  From a basic commode that is ideal as a short term solution, to a hardwood commode that will blend into any room, there is a wide range of solutions to choose from.

Personal hygiene aids
If reaching is uncomfortable, a wiping aid can help you retain your independence and make life much easier.

Ask i-care
Even with these toileting aids, going to the toilet can still be difficult.  Our highly trained and compassionate carers understand how you feel and can be there to help.  If you have a preference, you can also request a carer.

Cooking, eating and drinking

Cooking, eating and drinking, for whatever reason, may not be as easy as it used to be.  We understand if you value your independence however, you’ll still probably want to live as independently as possible.

Cooking
Simple solutions such as a jar opener which makes turning easier, or a chopping knife with an extra large handle for easy grip, can be highly effective in making cooking easier.

Eating
To make eating easier, a simple solution such as a plastic plate guard to stop food spilling off the side of the plate, or an egg cup that has suction cups to hold it in place, can make a big difference.

Drinking
Whether you suffer from tremor or simply find tipping your head back difficult, a specially designed mug can be just the solution to drinking in comfort.

Ask i-care
If you’re finding cooking too difficult, our carers can do it for you.  They can cook you a fresh meal of your choice once a week or every day if you wish.  They can also help you with eating and drinking too.

Sleeping and resting

While sleeping and resting are supposed to be the most relaxing times of the day, many people can feel anxious about the thought of going to bed or sitting down to relax on their own. Fortunately, there is a wide range of solutions to help.

Sleeping
For extra comfort, security and reassurance, products such as a bed rail or rope ladder to help you sit up, or a bed raiser to raise the height of your bed to make getting in and out easier, can make a big difference.  If you spend quite a lot of time in bed, you may also find solutions such as an over bed table or an adjustable backrest really useful.

Resting
One of the biggest concerns people have is being able to safely and comfortably lower themselves into an armchair and lift themselves back out.  If you too have this concern, a riser recliner armchair is a fantastic solution. For comfort and peace of mind, these armchairs will gently lower you into the chair and lift you back out.
